A friend of mine just posted this video. I shared it while pointing out the irony of posting it.
I do agree that in certain ways social media can create an illusion of socialization. Once in one of my psychology classes we learned about altruism. The following slide suggested ways in which people can become more altruistic. One of the bullet points was simply to ‘learn about altruism.’ I believe this can be much the same for learning to balance the proportions of social interaction one gains from social media and more direct forms of communication. Watching videos like this can help remind you that though social media can help you keep up with peoples’ lives, it does not completely satisfy the social interaction each human craves.
I like analogies. Eating one food will satisfy your immediate hunger, but slowly you will feel malnourished. Similarly, consuming social media will satisfy your immediate desires for social interaction, but will ultimately leave you socially malnourished.
